The Main Body Areas
The human body consists of three main areas. These are the head, trunk and extremities.
The head is made up of the cranium and the face. On the face, we recognize a mouth, a nose, a forehead, a chin, two eyes, two ears and two cheeks. In the mouth cavity there are teeth and a tongue. The cranium is covered by hair and contains the brain. The head is connected to the trunk by the neck.
The trunk consists of the areas such as the chest, abdomen, pelvis, waist and back. Inside these areas are cavities containing organs. The thoracic cavity contains the lungs and the heart. In the abdominal cavity are located organs of the digestive tract and the kidneys. In the pelvic cavity there are organs of the reproductive system and urinary system. In the spinal cavity there is the spinal cord. Below the waist there is the bottom.
The extremities, also called limbs, are joined to the trunk by girdles, the upper limbs by the shoulder girdle and the lower limbs by the pelvic girdle. The upper limb consists of the shoulder, upper arm, elbow, forearm, wrist and hand. The parts of the hand are a palm and five fingers, such as the thumb, index finger, middle finger, ring finger and little finger. The lower limb is made up of the hip, thigh, knee, calf, shin, ankle and foot. The foot consists of the sole, heel, instep and five toes.
